So I have some more information about my work at this years Pick Me Up. Myself along with four other budding illustrators, Evgenia Barinova, Matthew Bromley , Linus Kraemer and Craig Scott have all contributed a signed print each. There are 100 boxes, each with 5 prints and they'll be sold at Concrete Hermits stall at Pick Me Up 2011.

Carrie Nation

A few days ago I posted some work in progress and here's the final image.
I decided to do the piece on Prohibition in the USA after watching the new series, Boardwalk Empire. It's based on Carrie Nation who took it upon herself to destroy saloons with her trusty hatchet!
It was created for Concrete Hermit and their stall at this years Pick Me Up at Somerset House, London.

This is part of an image I'm working on at the moment. I'm trying to use more textures than usual and imitating the process of screen printing to gain a few new colours. Talking of which, the face may or may not change. Final image to be posted in the week.

Hypnotism

We were given a brief on our first day back to illustrate an 'ism'. I chose hypnotism and decided to do two digital prints based on the Pied Piper - one for the rats, one for the children. There was debate over the rat print as none of them were running but I preferred to keep it the way it was as it looked like they were dancing which I thought added to the idea of hypnotism and the story. Anyway, here they are. They will soon be screen printed - fingers crossed it comes out okay.

First week back at University, starting third year. Uh oh.

This is my Summer project. We had to illustrate a word beginning with AB, I chose above. I decided to do it about mountains and what can be found on them. These images are loosely based on my experiences of climbing Mt.Fuji last Summer.

Summer Placement

So my summers been pretty average with me having to spend the majority of my time in Dudley as my placement with Topman in London crippled my bank account. I spent three weeks with Topman in the men's design department with class mates Barnie Page and Isabel Greenberg designing t-shirts and what-not. I'm pretty sure Kate Moss once held the door open for me but it happened pretty fast so I cant be 100% on that. I would put some designs up but I don't think I'm allowed to until they decide if they are going to print any or not...but here's some proof i was in London

Scout Lino Print Set

So Bear Grylls has become the new Chief Scout and one of his aims are to get more adults involved to allow the 30,000 children on waiting lists to be able to take part in activities and join the their local Scout groups.

I decided to create a set of postcards/prints to be handed out to adults to inspire them to join up and for them to pass onto friends or people they think would be interested in volunteering. I kept it simple due to the medium I was using and added a semi nostalgic tone to the imagery to remind the adults what Scouts used to be like for them.

Eventually I'll make a note/letter to go with the set of prints to explain what to do with them. I'm also planning on sending one to the Scout Head Office to see what they think.

It also comes in two different editions.

Film Festival Posters

Here's the final outcome. Cause its a film festival, we thought we had to get the idea of motion involved.

Pretty interesting project. We ended up having a bloody good chat with grandad (the mechanic) but didn't use him in our project as it didn't tie in aswell as we thought. Nice guy though. We also met some veteran Moscow olympic cyclist at the Brighton velodrome. He thought the olympics were 'alright'.

Art Direction

We got given the brief to advertise any festival that we wanted. I hooked up with fellow peer Toby Jury Morgan (www.tobyjm.com) and decided to create posters, aswell as leaflets and a GIF on the International Bike Film Festival. We looked at different aspects of biking and went out and about and arranged photo-shoots with other bike enthusiasts. We focused on BMX, fixed gears, mechanics and also track racing at the local velodrome. Here are some discarded photographs that we didn't use.

Penguin released 30 years of bizarre book titles and we had to illustrate three of them, using different methods: drawing, photography and collage.

We also had to make posters to go with each book.

Gina from the Guardian came into Uni and asks us to illustrate an old article which was featured in the G2 supplement. Here was my response about a mother who brought her son heroin.

I focused on the heroin planation process and where the heroin comes from.

The watering can was used as a symbol for methadone but i changed the colour at the last minute.

Temple Lino Print

We had a week to do a self initiated project and I chose to do my first ever four layered lino print. I was pretty happy with the outcome but I would have preferred less lines and noise from the lino. This was just meant to be a a project to teach myself about lino and the printing process.

CD Mixtape

I posted the insert to this cd a while back and heres the rest of the project.

I chose to focus this project on Gypsies as the music tends to tell a story and have some sort of tale, narrative or teaching. I was also drawn towards the patterns on the caravans and clothing etc. The CD was bound in cloth to give the idea of a book due to the content of the songs and the narratives they hold

The cover, back, CD and poster were all screen printed. This was my first time screen printing and it was a bit of an awful experience.

Hopefully next year I'll be able to get my head around it and do some more. Unfortunately, the scan doesn't allow you to see the eggshell wheels behind the caravan too well. Sorry about this.

Open Day Poster

So i haven't updated in a long time.

This is an old Open Day poster I put forward for the University of Brighton to use.

The idea being that the triangle is the strongest shape on the earth and the image used was to depict the idea of teamwork and achieving a goal.

The whole batch had to be made without spending more than £5. I went sightly over budget.

Finally got my blog up and running. Going to get the ball rolling with some photos from my trip to Japan which took place over the Summer just gone. Going to try and get more posts up when the work comes in thick and fast.
